Hysteroscopy is a procedure that helps your doctor look inside your womb (Uterus). This is done using a narrow tube-like instrument called a Hysteroscope. The Hysteroscope is very slim (about 3 to 5 millimetres in diameter). It's carefully passed through the Vagina and neck of the womb (Cervix ) and into your Uterus. The Hysteroscope has a video camera inside, which sends pictures to a computer screen. This allows your doctor to check for any abnormalities in the lining of the Uterus. The Hysteroscope has different sizes and types and the choice of instrument depends upon the purpose of the procedure. The Hysteroscopy has special channels which allow the doctor to pass various instruments into the Uterus. For what purpose Hysteroscopy is used?

A Hysteroscopy is used to determine:
• Reasons for heavy or irregular bleeding

What happens during a Hysteroscopy?

A Hysteroscopy can either be done under General anesthesia, which means you will be in unconscious during the procedure, or with a Local anesthesia. If you have a Local anesthesia you will be in conscious. Occasionally, a Sedative is used to make you feel relax in conscious. Your Fertility specialist may advise to take a Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory painkiller (for example, ibuprofen) around one hour before Hysteroscopy to reduce pain immediately after the procedure. The doctor passes the Hysteroscope through your Vagina, Cervix and into the Uterus.

The Uterus is viewed in the TV monitor which shows the inside of your Uterus. Some gas or fluid may be pumped into your Uterus for Visualization. This makes it easier to see the lining of your Uterus. After this, the doctor may take a tiny piece of tissue (biopsy) from your Uterus. This will be sent to the laboratory for examination under the microscope. Sometimes small lumps (Polyps) are found. It may be possible to remove these during the test. After the procedure is completed, the Hysteroscope is gently removed. A Hysteroscopy procedure takes between 5-30 minutes.

Whether Hysteroscopy causes pain?

You may not feel any pain during Hysteroscopy under anaesthesia. Sometimes you may feel cramp like pain. If you are awake, you may feel something like period cramps at some stages. It causes only minimal discomfort for the Women. This includes

• The use of Anesthesia
• The use of pain killers
• The size and type of Hysteroscope
• The reason for which the procedure is done

When you are asked to give your consent to the procedure, these sorts of issues should be discussed. Ask your doctor or nurse about the options if you are worried about the possibility of pain

What can I expect after a Hysteroscopy?

If you have a Local anesthesia you can go home on the same day .If you have General anesthesia, you need to take rest upto 24 hours. Until the effects of the anaesthetic have passed. You have to arrange for someone to drive you home. You may experience some period-like cramps and mild bleeding. The bleeding is usually mild and should settle within seven days. To reduce the risk of infection, you should use sanitary towels rather than tampons. Take it easy for the first one or two days and take painkillers if needed.

What are the side-effects or complications from a Hysteroscopy?

The most common side-effects of the procedure are bleeding and pain, as mentioned above. Very rarely uterine perforations can occur with the Hysteroscope. If this happens you would need to stay in hospital overnight. It is also possible to develop an infection of the Uterus as a result of Hysteroscopy.
